Organising a small kitchen: 5 ideas for more space

A small kitchen benefits from clear routines. Before buying storage, consider what you use every day and where you need space to prepare meals. These five steps help you make better use of existing cupboards and drawers.

1. Group items by task

Keep knives and chopping boards near your preparation area, cooking utensils near the cooking area, and coffee accessories together. Move less frequently used items further back so everyday essentials remain easy to reach.

2. Measure drawers before buying

Measure the usable internal width, depth and height. Allow for runners, hinges and clearance when closing the drawer. An organiser needs to make items accessible, not just fit the measurements. Explore kitchen organisation and compare each product's dimensions with your drawer.

3. Group supplies by use

Keep breakfast items, baking ingredients and frequently used spices together. Place opened packets where you can see them. If transferring food into containers, choose suitable food containers and retain important packaging information such as contents, allergens and shelf life.

4. Keep a continuous preparation area clear

Choose a space that stays available for chopping and preparation. Prioritise items you actually use every day on the worktop. A beautiful container is only helpful if it supports your routine without occupying the next available work surface.

5. Improve one area first

Start with a single drawer or spice shelf. Try the arrangement for a few days before changing other areas. This helps you identify what works for you.
